Overview
- By including SLATE in your product,
you can provide immediate support for over 1000 printers. Since SLATE comes
with its own screen based configuration system, you don't even need to worry
about end user setup.
- You can further enhance the functionary and competitiveness of your
product by taking advantage of some of SLATE's advanced features:
-
- Support multiple printers on the same system.
- Output to parallel printers, serial printers, DOS files, DOS print
- spooler, and Novell network printers.
- Allow end users to include their laser printer soft fonts.
- Support proportional fonts (even for columnar reports).
- Support scalable font printers.
- Set exact print positions, independent of rows and columns.
- Print color text.
- Kerning, leading, overstrike, underlining, and strike through.
- Automatic Character Set Conversion.
- Print lines and shaded areas (laser printers only).
- With SLATE, your application can take advantage of the advanced features
of modern printers and continue to work smoothly with printers without those
features.
- By using SLATE, you can support over 1000 printers for less than the
cost of developing one more printer driver. You don't need to provide continuing
support as new printer drivers are required.
- The SLATE Maintenance
Agreement will keep your software and Printer
Database current with the latest printers.
- When you need graphics (or the ability to print lines and shading
on a dot matrix printer), you can simply upgrade to
SLATE with Graphics
with no changes to your existing code.
Details
- What is SLATE? SLATE is a full featured
Printer Driver for text printing. SLATE has three major components:
- Libraries: The first is a set of libraries
that link into your program. The over 170 text printing functions simplify
and speed up software development while making the application code independent
of the printer.
- Distribution Printer Database: SLATE
comes with a Distribution Printer Database
of over 1000 printers. The Database
may be altered with the tools provided to add, modify, or remove printers
or fonts.
- Configuration Tools: SLATE comes with
configuration and testing tools. These programs allow end users to select
their printers from the Distribution Printer Database and to specify how
they are connected to their system. They also allow end users to add download
fonts to their printer specification.
- The testing tools make extensive tests of the configuration prior
to running the application programs. This helps separate configuration problems
from application program problems.
- Distribution:Your application linked
into the SLATE Libraries, the Printer Database, and the configuration and
testing tools may be distributed
without royalties.
- Maintenance: SLATE
Maintenance Agreement provides
two updates of the SLATE software and the Printer Database per year.
- Hardware Requirements: An IBM-PC, PC/XT,
PC/AT, or compatible computer with at least 128K of available memory and
a hard disk drive.
- Memory Requirements: Including SLATE
will add 20-35K of code and 6-8K of data to an application program.
- Operation Systems: Microsoft MS-DOS
or IBM PC-DOS operating system, version 2.1 or later.
- DOS Extenders: Protected mode support
for the Rational/Tenberry DOS/16M extender, the PharLap 286 DOS extender,
the Blinker 286 DOS extender and the Borland Power Pack DOS extender (16
& 32 bit modes) is included in the Microsoft/Borland library group.
Support for the Rational/Tenberry DOS/4W and DOS/4G 32 bit DOS extenders,
as well as the PharLap 386 DOS extender, is included with the Watcom library
group. The TopSpeed DOS extender is included with the TopSpeed library group.
- Overlay Linkers: Overlay linker support
for Borland VROOM, Microsoft, RTLink, PLink and Blinker is included.
