Would a Report Writer that generates reports give you a better product with a competitive edge?

Overview

By including SCRIPT (and SLATE) in your product, you can provide a flexible Report Writer with immediate support for over 1000 printers.
Since SCRIPT provides the full text formatting capabilities, you will need to make only a few simple additions to your Application Program to create macros to access your data and commands to select the proper data. (In fact, you may want to get rid of all your existing report software.)

Since the report format is specified in a format file, you can give your End Users the ability to customize or create reports. The format files are standard ASCII files, so they can be edited with any text editor or word processor. Finally, additional reports require only format files, not more code.

You can further enhance the functionary and competitiveness of your product by taking advantage of some of SCRIPT's advanced features:

The key to SCRIPT is its extensibility. New macros to access application data require only a table entry. New commands to select data or provide other functions can be added by extending a table. Existing commands and macros may be changed or removed. New data sources can be added.

With SCRIPT, your application can use advanced features of modern printers and continue to work smoothly with printers without those features.

Details

What is SCRIPT? SCRIPT is a complete text formatting system that developers can incorporate into their application. SCRIPT uses (and requires) SLATE or SLATE with Graphics to provide the printer interface.

SCRIPT comes with the standard S_PRINT set of Formatting Commands and Macros. In addition, new commands and macros can be defined to work with data from the application program.

When SCRIPT is incorporated into an application program, it can accept commands and data from text and format files to build a formatted document. These files can be provided with the application and modified by the End User to add logos, alter the order and position of data, add lines and shading to create forms, etc.

Extending SCRIPT: SCRIPT can be extended to define macros that access internal application data. New commands can be added to call functions in the application to access new data or perform other operations. New data sources can be created to define new input data streams from a database or other sources in the application.

Distribution: Your application linked into the SCRIPT Libraries may be distributed without royalties.

Memory Requirements: The SCRIPT and SLATE systems will add 70K of code and 20K of data to an application. The SCRIPT and SLATE with Graphics systems will add 90K of code and 25K of data to an application. (SLATE may be overlaid with most overlay linkers.)

Operation Systems: Microsoft MS-DOS or IBM PC-DOS operating system, version 2.1 or later.

Additional Requirements: SLATE or SLATE with graphics is required.
